For a coffee hit, walk out the hotel and two doors down is the Reformatory Caffeine Lab, it’s a must.  The barista’s here also froth a mean Melbourne-esque cup of caffeine. Which isn’t a surprise given owner Simon Jaramillo is a fourth – generation coffee farmer from Columbia.  It’s also stand-up only, so the legs need to be in good working order to enjoy this place.

Morning Tea

Join the cue out the front of Bourke Street Bakery.  This itsy-bitsy bakehouse, that has legendary status in Sydney can barely fit two people inside but does a strapping sausage roll and apricot danish.   The lemon tarts and the various flavours of organic sourdough bread are equally as famous.

Shopping and People Watching

Held on the first Saturday of each month on the corner of Crown and Foveaux Streets, the Surry Hills Markets are a must-visit for everything from vintage fashion to antique décor, upcycled goods, handmade products and fashion from up and coming designers.

Crown Street offers a mecca of unique shops, housing boutiques, vintage stores and thrift shops.  When strolling down Crown Street make sure you don’t miss the side alleys where boutiques and fashion warehouses are tucked away.

As you are walking between the stores, don’t forget to observe the eclectic bunch of people who coming flocking to Surry Hills; from wannabe lifestyle bloggers to hipsters, and even the rare celebrity sighting, there no shortage of interesting characters.

Much on Some Lunch

Get a burger from Chur Burger, it could be the best burger you’ve evert had.  Chur Burgers are now found around the country but the craze started here on Albion Street.  Burgers aficionados also rave about Brooklyn Depot a few streets away.

Admire Some Art

There’s a certain appeal about gleaning an insight into the thought process of a great artist.  Surry Hills is the hub of some of the most contemporary art galleries: Michael Reid on Kippax St, Brett Whiteley Studio on Raper St (the actual home and studio of the acclaimed Aussie artist), the hip m2 gallery near Central Station and my personal favourite, Vicki Lee Gallery a new addition, in Bourke St.

Treat the Taste-buds Ask a local for the best ice cream place and only one name comes up: Messina.  It set up shop in Surry Hills in 2002 and has been drawing crowds ever since.  Do as a true Surry Hillsian would do and eat Gelato Messina for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As this gelato is so popular, other Messina’s have popped up around the country.
